Ernest Morriss had originally volunteered 3 months after hostilities commenced, however, he was rejected for failing the eye test. On finally being accepted he was sent out to Egypt and transferred to Mesopotamia.

Private Firman Frederick Myatt Husband of Mrs H Myatt of 47 North Street, Whitwick.
Formerly 203700 Leicestershire Regiment.
The Coalville Times of 30th November 1917 reported that Private Myatt died at 6.15pm from a wound in the abdomen only 4 hours after joining his Company. Having enlisted in May 1917 he had been in France for only 3 weeks and before the war he worked at Stableford Wagon Works in Coalville.

The Coalville Times of Friday 13 September 1918 reported Walter Partridge had last been in Whitwick on 5 August 1917 for the baptism of his baby son. He left a widow and 3 children residing in Green Lane.

Son of Mrs Roome of Leicester Road, Whitwick.
The Coalville Times of April 12 1918 reported that Ernest Roome had been posted missing on May 3rd 1917 and that Ernest had a brother A Roome serving in the Royal Navy Division.
Tigers' Cap Badge Ernest Roome does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commision database or the Soldiers Who Died in the Great War CD, however, a 11951 Private Albert Roome (8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment) is listed in both. The records state that Albert Roome was born and resided in Whitwick. According to the references Albert Roome died on the 3rd May 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial (Bay 5).

TAYLOR, Sam William 'C' Company, 1/5th Battalion

Serjeant S W Taylor The Military Medal Born at Shepshed, Son of William and Martha Taylor of The Forest, near mount St Bernards Abbey.
Sam Taylor was killed in 1/5th Leicesters attack on the Hindenburg Line. Late afternoon on the 29th September 1918 his battalion was advancing towards the German lines in the vicinity of Fosse Wood when a shell killed Sergeant Taylor. The Coalville Times dated Nov 1st 1918 contains extracts from a letter sent to his parents by an officer of the battalion. The letter states that he was killed instantaneously by a shell splinter wound to the head. The officer also said that days before he had recommended Sergeant Taylor for a gallantry award for single handedly dealing with a machine gun post. It is unclear whether this resulted in the award of his Military Medal or that this had been previously earned.

Private Percy Tookey, Leicestershire Regiment Son of Mr and Mrs Tookey of 221 Hermitage Road, Whitwick.
The Coalville Times reported that an officer wrote to Mrs Tookey stating that he had lost one of his best machine gunners. He further stated that Private Tookey was killed instantaneously by a shell and could not have suffered.

Private Tugby was killed whilst occupying trenches in the Ypres Salient.
It is likely that Ernest Tugby was a Nephew of John William Tugby who was killed in the Whitwick Mining Disaster. In the 1901 census Emily Tugby (Mother of John William) was listed as the head of a household in Castle Street along with Mary (daughter age 16) and Ernest (grandson age 6).

Pre War Frank Underwood was employed by the Forest Rock Granite Company and lived at Pare's Hill. He died of wounds received prior to 3 October.

Robert Underwood died in a French hospital from the effects of gas poisoning.

Private Edward Walton Son of James Walton and Ada Walton (Stepmother) of 311 Hermitage Road, Whitwick.
Edward Walton enlisted 1 day after hostilities commenced andwas killed in action at the Battle of Bazentin Ridge on the 14 July 1916. The Coalville Times of 4 August 1916 detailed the contents of a letter sent to his parents by Private Harry Sharpe in which he stated: "he met his death while killing a German officer, when a shell dropped a short distance away."

Educated at Whitwick Church School and a member of Whitwick Gymnasium, Alfred Wilson was the battalion gym instructor. Pre war he worked as a shunter at Whitwick Colliery.

Private Private John Henry Wyatt Son of Henry and Fanny Wyatt of 19 Silver Street, Whitwick.
Private Wyatt died in hospital at Boulogne having been wounded in the legs, head and hands. Before the war John Wyatt worked as a Putter at Whitwick Colliery and Henry his father was killed in the Whitwick Mining Disaster. After the disaster Fanny remarried and became Mrs Wibberley.
