Frederick Grice had completed seven years with the colours when war broke out, at the time he was serving on the North West Frontier. Initially in action on the Thai border in Malaya he spent ten days adrift in a boat to escape capture as Malaya and Singapore fell. he was eventually picked up by a British ship and dropped off in Ceylon. After returning home in October 1942 he rejoined his battalion and was killed in action shortly after the Normandy landings.

MOORE, Robert HMS Grenville Steward P/LX 22483 19 January 1940 23 -
Son of Emma Moore of Whitwick.
Husband of Minnie Louisa Moore of Pill, Somerset.
On 19 January 1940 the 1st Destroyer Flotilla was operating out of Harwich with six other ships of the Flotilla who were returning from an operation off the Dutch coast when in calm weather, HMS Grenville was mined at 1250 hrs in the Thames estuary, 23 nm east of the Kentish Knock LV, 51.39 N, 02.17 E, on a field laid by the German destroyers of FK Berger: Erisch Steinbrinck, Friedrich Ihn and Friedrich Eckoldt. HMS Grenville (Capt. Sir G.E. Creazy, RN) quickly capsized. Her bow was the last part of the ship to disappear. Two ships from the Flotilla disregarded their safety and lowered boats to pluck 118 men from the water. Seventy seven officers and crew lost their life in the sinking including Steward Moore who had only joined the ship three days earlier having been previously torpedoed. His wife gave birth to a son shortly after his death.

Brother of Lawrence Joseph.
Having undergone a refit following action against German destroyers on the 29th November 1940, HMS Javelin was recommisioned and undertook extensive sea trials. Part of this ‘working up’ procedure were high-speed manoeuvres in the English Channel during rough weather. As a result the following Leonard and Stoker Matthew Bedworth were washed overboard. Despite an extensive search they were never recovered.

Son of Edward and Cecilia Wood of 8 Parsonwood Hill, Whitwick.
Trooper Wood Trooper wood was wounded whilst taking part in the notorious "Operation Goodwood", part of the Battle of Caen, Normandy, France. His tank was hit by a 88mm Shell and he was blown out of the turret. Somehow he managed to find shelter and was found the next day. He died in Markfield Sanitorium and is buried in the old graveyard on Parsonwood Hill
