Born in Notting Hill on the 14th October 1885 his father, Alfred, trained as a boilermaker and applied for a job
with the Midland Railway. His father returned to London but Charles stayed with the Barton family in Hugglescote.
Employed at South Leicestershire Colliery he married Jane James who lived on Silver Street and they set up home on Pares Hill.
Charles and Jane had 5 children, Victor Charles Ernest of 84 Ashby Road, Hugglescote, Bill, Gordon, Joseph and Edward.
A member of the "Famous Fifty" he was wounded at Ypres and was reposted to the
1/4th Battalion. He was further wounded by shrapnel at the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 and again on the 21st October 1917
when fragments from an aircraft bomb struck him in the chest whilst serving in the St Elie Left Sector.
Along with many in his battalion he was the victim of a gas attack on 18th June 1918 in the village of Gorre.
It was on the return to his unit that Charles was killed on the 2nd July 1918 by a high explosive German shell. | ||||||

Lance Corporal Concannon was killed during an attack at Westhoek in friont of Ypres when he was
shot by a sniper.
A friend of Arthur's, G H Phipps, who returned his private effects also wrote that:"Arthur earned a V.C. as big as a battleship. This is what everyone says who saw him. We both went to Confession and Holy Communion two days before the battle. You are quite aware of what we were to each other, I have been hard hit by his death, for I could look the world over and not find a better chum. I have been fairly knocked up over it, and it makes me wild that after being out here two years and nine months, he should get knocked over at the eleventh hour. I feel it pretty hard, but then, what is my loss compared to yours? Please accept my heartfelt sympathy". | ||||||

| HMS Sparrowhawk was an Acasta Class Destroyer sunk at the Battle of Jutland after colliding with HMS Broke. Broke had been devastated by the German battle squadron and with her steering hard over and engines running at full speed she careered into the Sparrowhawk. The force of the collision catapulted 23 men from the Sparrowhawk onto the Broke's deck. To compound the problem the destroyer Contest, next astern of Sparrowhawk, could not avoid her and took 30 feet off her stern. Sparrowhawk was left drifting helplessly and was sunk the following day. | ||||||
